This is a long term project where I am having a go at various classic villain archetypes. I'm going for a cartoony look with the baddies being only a little bit scary. Each one has a little quirk, for example the mad scientist only having half his face showing. He has a device to talk through and to make up for the lost expressiveness of his mouth his eyes and eyebrows are eccentrically caricatured.

These character concepts are escapees and have been wandering in cold, tough conditions for weeks. The goal was texture from top to bottom, everything from the feel of the way worn clothes to details like rips and patches to mud and grime were exploited.

I trialled an interesting approach for this design. I started with top down silhouettes and mixed/merged them till I found interesting shapes. Then I drew into the shapes to tease out a recognisable design. I then rendered the silhouettes into 3d forms and chose one to develop. Taking the basic design I then elaborated it with finer details and added a dark/cool colour scheme for some of the panels.
